Baker Creek’s Spring Planting Festival 2014
Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company has supplied us with thousands of GMO Free USA seed packets–packets we have passed out to people thus far on the 1700 miles David and I have traveled on our run for a GMO Free USA. The packets have opened doors, conversations, and minds to the importance of the issues related to GMO chemical-based agriculture vs. sustainable organic agriculture.
A month or so ago, Lisa from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company asked if we were going to be able to attend the Baker Creek Spring Planting Festival. We didn’t even know Baker Creek had such a festival! We weren’t scheduled to run through Mansfield, Missouri until May 9th. But when we learned about the festival, we agreed that we simply had to attend.
Kathy from Baker Creek and her hubby, Mike, invited us to park our trailer at their beautiful home in beautiful Seymour. Baker Creek gave us a free booth in a prime festival location.
In short, thanks to Baker Creek’s owner, Jere Gettle, and other Baker Creek employees, Baker Creek has greatly increased the impact we’ve been able to make on our run for a GMO Free USA!
As for the festival, we felt like we were at home surrounded by friendly people who deeply care about each other and the environment.
We talked with dozens of people about Monsanto, the leading purveyor of GMOs. Four of the people were former Monsanto employees. One spoke of a three-headed bird and a six-legged frog. Another spoke of Monsanto poisons. They were both greatly relieved when they walked away from Monsanto. One festival goer spoke of the experiment she personally conducted verifying that mice won’t eat GMOs when given a choice. Another spoke of how “hogs’ insides are all ate up” since farmers started feeding their pigs GMO feed. (Howard Vlieger and Judy Carmen scientifically verified harm to pigs due to GMO feed and Roundup.) Many people spoke of Monsanto’s GMO contamination, law suits, lawyers, intimidation, harassment, government collusion, etc.
And as we’ve come to expect, nobody spoke in favor of Monsanto and GMOs. Nobody!
People always speak of “the GMO controversy.” In our Run For a GMO Free USA, I’ve come to think of the alleged GMO controversy as industry propaganda. Virtually everyone wants GMOs labeled at the very least. Most would prefer to see GMOs and Monsanto eliminated from the earth.
Thanks to Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company for the important part it plays in providing heirloom, GMO-Free seeds to people around the world. We deeply appreciate Baker Creek’s work and support on our Run For a GMO Free USA!
