Sitka Stop GMO Salmon Rally

I’ve known Paul Rioux for a long time. He’s the guy who organized the Sitka Stop GMO Salmon Rally and started the FB page, Sitka Stop GMO Salmon Rally. Ray Friedlander works with the Sitka Conservation Society. She liked what Paul was doing so SCS joined in to help Paul with the rally. Ray saw my blog so she asked me to talk on a KCAW radio interview with Paul and herself. She also asked me to speak at the rally.

This is what I said at the rally:

Six years before I was born, the FDA approved the first GMO plants. They ignored the warnings their own scientists had made and lied by saying they had no data showing that GMO plants are harmful.

Now, more than 20 years later, we can’t let them ignore the warnings anymore. GMO plants are harmful! The American Academy of Environmental Medicine tells doctors that they should advise all their patients to avoid genetically modified foods. Here is their statement. “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including:
• infertility,
• immune problems,
• accelerated aging,
• faulty insulin regulation, and
• changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system.

Today the FDA is telling us genetically modified salmon are not harmful to our health. They are ignoring more and more studies that show how harmful GM foods can be.

Do you believe the FDA?

Do you want to feed genetically modified salmon to your children?

Do you want genetically modified salmon to invade the wild waters of Alaska?

Do you want to be an FDA GMO salmon guinea pig?

Neither do I.

Martin Luther King said, “He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.”

GMO salmon is evil. By being here today and protesting against GMO salmon, you are standing up for what is right.

Let’s unite our voices and shout loud enough to be heard in Washington, D.C.

“No Way, FDA! No way!”

I want to say thank you to Paul, Ray, the Sitka Conservation Society, KCAW, Dan Etulain, and all the people that made posters and came out to the rally.

Lots have people have already submitted comments to the FDA. In fact, so many people submitted comments that the FDA extended the comment period to April 25th. Everyone needs to comment. Go to www.regulations.gov. Search: GM Salmon, then tell the FDA, No Way To Frankenfish!

Harbor Mountain Run

On Saturday my dad and I went on a 15 mile run. We ran from Jeff’s house up Harbor Mountain. Jeff is one of my dad’s friends. He’s an ultra-marathoner. My dad refers to as “Crazy” in one of his blogs.

On the way up the road, I learned how hard it is to run in uneven snow. And I learned running in that kind of snow really is a nice ankle strengthening thing. When we got back down to the Cross Trail, my dad and I ran into someone who was throwing a ball for his dog. He told us good luck with what we’re doing.

I am still pretty amazed at how much this run across the USA has already spread around town, and I’d like to thank everyone who has liked or shared our blogs and the Facebook Running The Country page.
